choroba schizofrenia
Dementia is a syndrome caused by brain disease, usually of chronic or progressive character in which such high cognitive functions as: memory, thinking, understanding, counting, learning ability and language are disturbed. Weakening of cognitive functions are accompanied usually by: lowering of emotions control, impulses control, motivation and behavior disorders. Dementia usually destructively affects the course of basic life activities of a patient, (hygiene care, getting dressed, eating, etc).

The most often cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease (50-60% of cases), and the second is angiogenic dementia. Dementia of mixed etiology is also frequent. Other factors causing dementia are: head injury, brain tumors, infections, alcohol abuse, brain degenerative diseases, focal lesions (epilepsy), metabolic diseases, demyelinating diseases (multiple sclerosis), hereditary diseases and drugs and toxins.

Due to dementia etiology it can be divided into primary and terminal. In primary dementia neurodegenerative process directly concerns brain tissue causing its degeneration. Terminal or reversible dementia is when it is caused by potentially reversible reasons and they indirectly lead to demented symptoms appearance. Removal of the cause should potentially condition dementia treatment. Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy’s bodies disease, fronto-temporal dementia, Huntington disease, Parkinson’s disease, Wilson’s disease belong to primary dementia. In terminal dementia we can distinguish: angiogenic dementia (multiple infarctional dementia, generalized sclerosis, vasculitis), dementia in brain hypoxia, post traumatic dementia, toxic dementia (drugs, alcohol, poisons), dementia in deficiency disorders (vitamin B12 deficiency, folic acid deficiency) metabolic disorders, (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, Cushing syndrome, hyperparathyroidism/hypoparathyroidism), CNS tumors, euroinfections (HIV, syphilis, brain inflammation).

Main symptoms:

  • memory disturbances (most distinct during learning new information) and disorders of other cognitive functions (judgment, thinking, planning, organizing, general information processing, language).
  • disorders in functioning in the range of everyday life,
  • preserved awareness of the surrounding (ability of recognizing the surrounding),
  • emotional imbalance, irritation, anger outbursts, apathy, mood lowering, primitive social behavior,
  • symptoms of disorders are visible at least for 6 months.
