Sleep disorders belong to one of the most often in psychiatric practice. Improper sleep is a sign of many psychic disorders. It can also be a disorder completely independent on other diseases. Several basic types of these dysfunctions can be distinguished:

  • insomnia – insufficient amount or/and quality of sleep during the night which is accompanied by ill-being during the day, sleepiness and fatigue, mood lowering, discouragement. Periodical sleeplessness concerns 20-30% of population.
  • Excessive sleepiness (hypersomnia) – sleepiness does not abate after sleep and/or appears during engaging activity.
  • Parasomnias – undesirable phenomena (mostly movable), appearing most often in the moment of transition between the sleep and awake state.
  • Night fears- rapid awakenings accompanied by a strong anxiety, quick heartbeat, quick breath, excessive sweating.
  • Nightmares-scary dreams occurring most often during the second part of the night. Patients have a vivid memory of terrifying content of dreams.
  • Somnambulism (sleepwalking/lunatics) – recurrent episodes of motor activity present during the sleep which are not accompanied by coming back to consciousness. Activity during the episode can be limited to sitting in bed or it can be complex (getting dressed, preparing the meal, leaving home, etc).
